Guided Reading 2

Guided reading is small group reading instruction designed to support students in developing reading proficiency. With guided reading students focus on the meaning of the story and they learn how to apply different reading strategies when they come to a stop on a word they do not know. The students learn different readingstrategies such as context clues, letter and sound knowledge, and syntax or word structure from each other and with the guidance of the teacher. The goal of guided reading is to ensure that students will eventually read independently with approximately 90% accuracy.

Guided reading should take about 15 to 20 minutes long. The students should be divided into small groups with four to six students to each group. Appropriate reading books should be selected for the group based on their reading levels and each student should have their own copy of the text. Readings should also capture the student’s attention while maintaining the child interested in the text. Other students in the class should be working on reading based activities and should know ahead of time not to disrupt those students who are in their guided reading groups.

Before reading, the teacher should establish a purpose for reading and preview the text with students. Here the teacher can introduce new vocabulary; students make predictions about the text, and maybe even talk about the strategies they use that help them. During reading, the teacher observes the students as they read the text as a group or independently. The teacher provides guidance by helping some of the students decode, asking questions about the story, and encourage students to try something again or ask questions about what they do not understand. After reading, the teacher may ask open-ended questions based on the story to check for comprehension. Also have a discussion with the students and try to relate the story to the student’s everyday lives.
